Deliverable #13

Deliverable #13 project manager: Megan Schottanes

Personality Overview of Project Team

Emett – Guardian Protector
The guardian protectors care about others a lot, in this case it would include our team members. Protectors make sure the work gets done regardless of circumstances. This helped our team by meeting all of the deadlines with our deliverables and meeting times. Being accustomed to working alone, we were able to get all of our work completed on time even if occasional meeting times did not work. Full personality description here.

Mike – Artisan Composer
Artisan composers often get lost in their work, working for long periods of time until it is completed. Sometimes they are considered quiet because they speak creatively through their work. While still considering other team members, composers are able to tell what belongs and what does not. This attention to detail was helpful in our team by making sure all deliverables were functional and included all necessary parts. Full personality description here.

Lauren – Guardian Inspector
The defining trait about Inspectors is that they are always dependable, no matter what. They often show great determination in their work, as well as looking out for others. Inspectors are considered highly sociable which helped to increase our team communication. They are also ‘by the book’ types, making sure all specifications are completed fully and that there are no outliers. This helped to ensure the scope of our project matched up with our MOV. Interaction between types
To sum up this mix of personalities with our team, we were not that diverse. Our team consisted of three Guardian types and one Artisan. Although we did not have much diversity, this mix of personalities helped us greatly with project management and completing this project. Having three Guardian types on our team was important because that type is concerned with the completion of work on a set schedule. We believe that this helped us get all of our deliverables completed, correctly, ahead of schedule each week. When we had work to get done, we put our brains together and got it done. It was also helpful to have an Artisan in our group. This added a creativity aspect to our mostly straight edged team. This combination was great for the type of project we were working on, we were able to meet all requirements on schedule as well as adding our own imagination into the project making it unique.

Challenges

A challenge that we faced in the beginning of the project was the initiation of communication. In completing this personality survey we discovered the reason for this problem; our team is entirely introverted by nature. This made it harder to begin communication and express ideas freely. Once the ice was broken though, communication was greatly improved and was no longer a challenge. Overall, we did not encounter many challenges that had to do with interactions between our team and between personality types.

New Insight

With the completion and closing of this project, we were able to look at the process as a whole in working together in our project team. Using our experiences and the personality survey outcomes we were able to make a few conclusions. First of all, it was beneficial to have at least one Guardian personality in our group, which helped keep the structure. Secondly, for this type of creative project, an Artisan is definitely beneficial to have. We think it would have been beneficial to also have an Idealist and a Rationalist in our group. This would have added even more diversity and experience into our group. Although we did not have a team member from every category, our team had the skill set and experience necessary to complete this project exceptionally well.

Deliverable #12

Deliverable #12 project manager: Mike Cornell

Based on our Deliverable Structure Chart and Deliverable Definition Table, our company decided to outsource the physical design of our system. Based on our other work, we decided that it would be beneficial to let an out of house organization complete this part of our system. This freed up resources that we were able to distribute to other areas of our system. Below is our selection criteria, risks associated with outsourcing this, and our recommendation on two candidate companies, Blue Fountain Media and Forix Web Design.

Selection Criteria

Criteria
Description
Return on Investment

This equates to the benefits-the cost divided by the cost. This gives us a clear picture of the efficiency of the system. This is a good measure to use because we can see several years into the use of the system.
Likelihood of Achieving MOV

The outsourced company must be able to achieve what is needed in the MOV. This is the most important criteria because if the MOV is not met, the project will not be successful.
Time to Develop System

We are looking to have the physical design of the system completed in a timely manner. It also needs to be done correctly. The faster this is completed, the sooner the system can be implemented.
Availability of Skilled Team Members

Our company is small with few members skilled in this area. We looked for a company with enough skilled team members for this to be completed without any over allocation of worker hours.
Country Recognition

We chose two experienced companies that have a good reputation. This helps ensure that this area of the system is completed fully and on time. This puts pressure on the outside company to keep their good reputation and standards. This will also help them get more business with the same kinds of systems.

Risks of Outsourcing

Risk
Response
Scope does not meet MOV

Make sure to meet with outsourced organization to assemble an agreement. Specify what is included as well as what is not included.
Prolonged Schedule

This is a huge outsourcing risk. We have less control making sure this stays on schedule because it is not in-house. We will request frequent progress reports and include any specifics in the contract.
Security Threats

Sending any of our information out of house is a big security risk, especially in the handling of private information/documents. This could involve a loss of data and increasing the budget suddenly.

Based on the above selection criteria and the risks involved, our team has made a decision on which company to outsource the physical design of our system to. We chose to outsource this deliverable to Blue Fountain Media due to several reasons based on our criteria. First, they are very well known, working with several big organizations around the world including the NFL, NASA, Walt Disney, as well as many others. It is good to work with a company with a good reputation because they want to maintain that reputation. Another criteria that was important was the availability of skilled workers. They are a big company with many employees, making it easy for them to not get over allocated in their resources.
